Nobody wants to feel like the “new kid on the block,” especially when you are actually new to the block. Meeting and introducing yourself to your new neighbors is a great way to feel closer to your community and even open the door for new neighborly friendships. While introducing yourself and getting to know your neighbors may be trickier with social distancing in place, there are still plenty of ways to show your neighbors love from afar.
Spend Time Outside
With everyone taking advantage of the warm spring weather, there’s no better way to introduce yourself to your neighbor than by simply spending time outside. Not only are you likely to run into neighbors, but it will also give the impression that you enjoy the neighborhood and are open to meeting others who live there. Some great ways to spend time outdoors include reading a book on the grass, relaxing on your patio, doing some gardening or taking a walk around the community. When you see a neighbor pass by, or if you pass by a neighbor yourself, be sure to say hello and possibly start up a friendly conversation to introduce yourself to them.
Drop Off Treats
Nobody can turn down a tasty homemade treat. If your family has done their fair share of quarantine baking and want someone to share with, consider dropping some off at your neighbor’s home. Securely wrap up the treats in a zip-close bag or container and attach a note with your name, phone number and a short neighborly message. Leave the goodies and note in their mailbox or on their doorstep for them to pick up and snack on when they please.
Bring or Order a Meal
Bringing by a meal for your neighbors is another wonderful way to introduce yourself. This is an especially great time to give to those who may be currently moving in and don’t have time to cook themselves, as well as working parents or others whose lives have intensified throughout this time. Make the meal from scratch yourself or order out from a local restaurant and have it delivered to their front door. Don’t forget to include a note with your name and number!
Write a Letter or Send a Care Package
Handwritten letters and care packages are a personal and heartfelt way to introduce yourself and show someone you care. Write a letter to your neighbor introducing yourself, your family and offer some words of encouragement. If your neighbors are new to the neighborhood, you could even list some of your favorite businesses or things to do in the area. Provide your contact information and let them know they can come to you if they should need help in any way. If you know of some items they might be in need of during their move or might enjoy otherwise, such as a book, candle, flowers or your favorite household cleaner, organize them into a care package and leave it at their doorstep.
Invite Them Over
Outdoor social hours are the new big neighborhood activity. If you and your neighbors are comfortable, invite them over for some socially distanced socializing. Set up some chairs in a driveway or back patio or sit across the street from each other. Bring snacks and drinks for your household to enjoy and chat away while getting to know your new neighbors. If possible, get the other neighbors to join in the neighborly fun. Just make sure to keep your distance while mingling!
